Police arrest fugitive accused of homicide committed in Cabo Frio in 2018
A fugitive wanted for homicide in Cabo Frio in 2018 was arrested during a carnival block in Recife, Brazil.
A man who had been on the run from the justice system in Rio de Janeiro for nearly eight years was apprehended in Recife, Pernambuco, during a carnival event. The arrest took place through a coordinated effort involving the Military Police of Pernambuco (PMPE), the Intelligence Subsecretariat of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro, the 25th BPM of Cabo Frio, and the Disque Denúncia hotline. The suspect, identified as Antônio Pedro Sobrinho, nicknamed 'Paraíba', had been wanted for a homicide that occurred in July 2018, when a victim was killed trying to break up a fight in Cabo Frio, a region in the Lagos area of Rio de Janeiro.
Investigations revealed that Sobrinho was living in the Campo Grande neighborhood of the Metropolitan Region of Recife and had been working as a street vendor selling popsicles and ice cream. Intelligence reports indicated that he frequently appeared at Casa Caiada beach in Olinda. The police action was initiated after receiving a tip-off about the fugitive's presence, highlighting the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in tracking down and apprehending fugitives within Brazil.
The importance of this arrest extends beyond just the individual case, as it underscores the challenges law enforcement faces with fugitives who evade justice by relocating and blending into new communities. This incident also raises awareness about the ongoing efforts of police in both Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco to collaborate and share intelligence in order to tackle crime across state lines, ultimately aiming to ensure public safety during significant events like Carnival.
