A 2-year-old girl was hospitalized in intensive care after consuming catuaba and suffering a fall, leading to concerns of neglect and abuse.
A 2-year-old girl in Campo Grande was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after ingesting approximately half a bottle of catuaba, an alcoholic beverage, and subsequently falling from her bed. The incident, which took place on Saturday evening, resulted in the child experiencing seizures, a cranial injury, and signs of alcohol intoxication. Authorities are currently investigating the case as possible neglect and abandonment.
The child was brought to the local health post by her mother, who is 20 years old. Initially, the mother was unaware that her daughter had consumed alcohol. During a medical assessment, the child suffered a seizure and required urgent medical intervention. The mother reported that her daughter found the catuaba bottle on the floor of their home and drank from it without her knowledge, leading to drowsiness and a subsequent fall from their bed, causing serious injury.
Following the fall, the girl showed signs of severe distress including tremors, eye rolling, and a lack of responsiveness. Medical staff immediately escalated her condition due to the severity of the symptoms. The case highlights serious concerns regarding child safety and potential neglect, which could lead to legal repercussions for the mother and broader discussions around child welfare policies within the community.
