São Vicente will have R$ 3.4 million works against flooding

São Vicente will receive R$ 3.4 million in state-funded dredging works to combat flooding in two channels.

The city of São Vicente, located on the coast of São Paulo, Brazil, is set to undergo significant dredging works financed by the state program Rios Vivos, aimed at mitigating flooding issues in the area. An investment of R$ 3.4 million was allocated for the projects, with the service order signed during the recent meeting of the Condesb, the council for the metropolitan region's development. The work will focus on two specific channels that are highly susceptible to flooding, with plans to enhance their drainage capabilities.

The dredging efforts will span a total of 1.65 kilometers, including 1.05 kilometers along the canal at Avenida Alcides de Araújo in the Catiapoã neighborhood and 0.65 kilometers at the canal on Avenida Penedo. These improvements will involve the removal of silt, garbage, vegetation, and other debris that obstruct water flow, thereby reducing the risk of overflow incidents during heavy rainfall. This initiative is crucial given the area's history of flooding, which poses risks to both public safety and infrastructure.

Furthermore, the project will be overseen by SP Águas, the state agency responsible for such interventions. Local officials indicated that this funding will enhance collaborative planning among municipalities to better address common environmental challenges. By implementing these changes, São Vicente aims to not only reduce flooding but also improve overall urban resilience against climate-related impacts.
