Nauris Puntulis Proposes Law Changes to Mandate Service Provision in Latvian Language
Nauris Puntulis, a deputy from the opposition National Alliance in Latvia, proposes amendments to the Consumer Rights Protection Law to require communication with consumers in the state language.
Nauris Puntulis, a member of the opposition National Alliance (NA) in Latvia, has put forth a proposal for amendments to the Consumer Rights Protection Law. He advocates for the inclusion of a new section, 'Language of Communication,' which would mandate that all interactions between consumers and service providers, including the provision of information, service, and contract signing, take place in the official state language, Latvian. This initiative highlights the ongoing discussions around the use of language in public services and consumer rights in Latvia.
The proposed amendment aims to ensure that consumers in Latvia have the right to receive services and communication in their native language, reinforcing the importance of the Latvian language in various service sectors. Puntulis suggests that service providers must ensure that all prepared documents, as well as digital content interfaces (apps, websites), and customer service systems (call centers, in-person service counters), are available in Latvian. Furthermore, if a customer agrees, the service provider may offer communications in another EU member state language, thus allowing some flexibility while still prioritizing Latvian.
The push for these amendments reflects a broader sentiment about national identity and the protection of the Latvian language, especially considering Latvia's history of cultural influence from neighboring countries. By formalizing such language requirements in law, the National Alliance aims to enhance consumer rights and promote the state's language in everyday business practices, which could spark debates about language policy and its implications for businesses operating in Latvia.
