Japan is experiencing significant snowfall on the Sea of Japan side and even in urban areas, prompting warnings in 10 prefectures as snow continues until the 9th.

On the 8th of December, a strong winter pressure pattern led to heavy snowfall along the Sea of Japan side, particularly affecting northern and western Japan. Areas such as Kyoto and Tottori prefectures had snowfall warnings issued due to remarkable accumulation, with 35 cm reported in Nantan City, Kyoto, and 37 cm in Tottori City within just 6 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency has recorded significant snow depths across various regions, including 420 cm in Aomori City and 267 cm in Uonuma City, Niigata.

As of 6 PM on the 8th, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued heavy snow warnings for 10 prefectures, including Niigata, Tottori, and Yamaguchi, anticipating considerable additional snowfall. Over the next 24 hours, areas like Hokuriku could see up to 60 cm of snow, while the Kanto region might experience 50 cm. The agency stressed the dangers of avalanches and snow accumulation on structures, urging residents in heavy snow regions to exercise caution.

The snowfall has significantly impacted transportation as well. By 8 PM, All Nippon Airways had canceled 171 flights and Japan Airlines 105, affecting over 40,000 passengers. East Japan Railway reported numerous cancellations and delays on the Chuo Line, leading to extensive disruptions for thousands of commuters. The severe weather is a serious concern for both safety and travel in affected regions.
