Ministries must report on progress regarding Epstein case files in March
Latvia's Prime Minister has tasked various ministries with reporting by March 20 on actions related to the Jeffrey Epstein case materials, in which Latvia is mentioned as a potential site for the recruitment of underage girls.
In response to recent developments concerning materials related to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has mandated that relevant ministries report on their findings and actions by March 20. The ministries involved include the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Welfare, and the Ministry of Education and Science, which have been directed to investigate the reported circumstances and provide support for victims, as well as to encourage public reporting of such incidents.
The Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Welfare, Diāna Jakaite, indicated that the tasks assigned by the Prime Minister are extensive. Among these is the responsibility to determine the circumstances of the case, offer necessary support to individuals affected, and implement preventive measures to educate the public. The Ministry of the Interior is particularly urged to prepare an interim report for the Cabinet of Ministers by the specified deadline, summarizing both completed actions and ongoing efforts.
Latvia's involvement in the Epstein case is prompting a serious examination of the nation’s role in issues related to human trafficking and the protection of minors. This requires not only compliance from the government ministries but also a broader societal commitment to addressing such grave concerns, ensuring that preventive measures are put in place to mitigate future occurrences of exploitation.
