Action by Modi Government as Indus Treaty is Suspended: Tender Issued for Dam on Chenab

Following the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, the Modi government has initiated important infrastructure and energy projects on the Chenab River.

In a significant move after the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, the Modi government has taken steps to advance major infrastructure and energy projects on the Chenab River. The state-owned company NHPC has issued a tender for the construction of the Sawalkot hydroelectric project in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, signaling a strong commitment to harnessing the river's potential for generating electricity.

The tender for the Sawalkot hydroelectric project has been opened with an estimated cost of ₹5,129 crores. This project will be executed under a single package, which includes the construction of a diversion tunnel, excavation, a dam, and various roadworks associated with the project. The inclusion of essential components such as the right bank spiral tunnel and access tunnel indicates the extensive scale and complexity of this initiative.

Bidding for this project will commence on March 12 and run until March 20, with a validity period of 180 days for the bids. Construction is expected to be completed within a timeline of approximately 3,285 days. This project is considered crucial for electricity generation on the Chenab River, reflecting the government's strategic approach towards water resources management amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan.
