The deepest snow in the country remains in the southern part of Latgale
The southern part of Latgale in Latvia is experiencing the deepest snow in the country, with snow depths reported up to 46 centimeters.
In Latvia, the southern region of Latgale is currently experiencing the deepest snow in the country, with measurements showing snow accumulation of up to 46 centimeters according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Center. This week, snow depth in Dagda increased from 40 to 47 centimeters, marking the highest snowfall since March 2023, although it did decrease by one centimeter on Sunday. Other areas in Latvia, such as Krāslava and Daugavpils, are also reporting significant snow depths, contributing to a varied landscape across the country.
The second-deepest snow cover was recorded in the Piedruja region of Krāslava, measuring at 41 centimeters, while Daugavpils reported a snow layer of 35 centimeters. Additional observations noted that Rēzekne and Līvāni had snow depths of 30 and 32 centimeters respectively, indicating a substantial snow presence. In contrast, some regions like Daugavgrīva and Mērsrags observed much thinner layers of snow, down to six centimeters, showcasing a disparity in weather conditions across different locations in Latvia.
The data collection is conducted by the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Center using ultrasonic sensors in specially prepared areas for accurate measurements. This systematic approach helps track the snowfall and its implications on local weather patterns, potentially affecting transportation and winter activities in the region. With winter in full effect, this information is crucial for both residents and authorities as they plan for the challenges posed by heavy snow conditions.
