Three wildfires in Gyeongbuk this weekend led to the evacuation of around 100 residents as firefighting efforts continue.
This weekend, three wildfires broke out in Gyeongbuk province, necessitating the evacuation of several local residents. The first fire occurred in the Jukjang-myeon area of Pohang at around 5:30 AM on the 8th, reportedly igniting in a bamboo grove and burning approximately 0.3 hectares of forest before being extinguished by 8:44 AM. Firefighters and city officials are closely monitoring the area to prevent further incidents.
The second fire ignited the previous night in Yangnam-myeon, Gyeongju, at around 9:31 PM, covering a fire line of 0.92 kilometers and affecting a total area of approximately 4.27 hectares. Although the site is located near the Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant, the main fire was brought under control by the morning of the 8th, with a suppression rate of 94%. A significant response effort involved 14 firefighting helicopters and 157 personnel attempting to fully extinguish the remaining hotspots.
Additionally, just a few minutes later, at 9:40 PM, another fire erupted in a nearby area of Ibeon-ri, which impacted 10 hectares and established a fire line of 1.74 kilometers. Strong northwesterly winds of 4.3 m/s contributed to the situation, complicating firefighting efforts. By the morning of the 8th, the suppression rate in this area was at 60%, with 17 firefighting helicopters and 175 personnel deployed. The city of Gyeongju has issued evacuation orders for the nearby communities, with 106 residents taking refuge in designated shelters, while 13 individuals have returned home.
