Foibe, ANPI and the Tuscany Region Censor Bocchino

The ANPI and the Tuscany Region have censored Italo Bocchino from participating in a commemoration event for the Day of Memory due to protests against his inclusion.

The Day of Memory is approaching, and tensions have risen as the ANPI (National Association of Italian Partisans) has taken a stand against Italo Bocchino's participation in a regional council session in Tuscany. Bocchino, the editorial director of Secolo d'Italia, was invited to present a short film about the history of exiles, created by Tuscan entrepreneur Federica Masoni Martini. However, after significant protests from the ANPI and ANED (National Association of Ex-Political Deportees), the president of the local assembly, Stefania Saccardi, decided to proceed without any external speakers for the remembrance event.

This decision has sparked backlash from the Fratelli d'Italia party, which announced it would not attend the regional session. Chiara La Porta, the party's group leader in the region, criticized Saccardi’s choice as "absurd and disconcerting," pointing out that the Day of Memory is an essential occasion to honor the tragedy of the exodus and the foibe, which has long been overlooked. The conflict reveals deep divisions within Italian society regarding historical narratives, particularly concerning events that involve both Italian and Yugoslav perspectives during and after World War II.

The controversy not only affects the notation of historical memory in Italy but also raises questions about freedom of speech and the dynamics of political representation in commemorative events. As the debate continues, it emphasizes the need for discourse that drives understanding rather than division, especially on sensitive topics that remain contentious in contemporary Italy.
