'Sore tongue' and 'fatigue' among symptoms of overlooked deficiency, doctor warns

A doctor highlights the common symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency, including fatigue and a sore tongue, which often goes unnoticed in many individuals, particularly those with pernicious anemia and certain dietary restrictions.

In a recent discussion, Dr. Suraj Kukadia, widely known as Dr. Sooj, has brought attention to the critical yet often overlooked vitamin B12 deficiency and its associated symptoms. He notes that individuals often experience non-specific symptoms like fatigue, sore tongues, and even cognitive confusion, which can lead to unrecognized health issues. This deficiency is predominantly seen in those with pernicious anemia as well as individuals over 60 and those following vegan diets.

According to statistics from the NHS, only 6% of individuals under 60 and 20% over 60 report issues related to vitamin B12 deficiency, while an additional 11% of people on vegan diets are particularly at risk. Dr. Kukadia explains that beyond fatigue and a sore tongue, vitamin B12 deficiency can manifest in various ways, including symptoms such as muscle weakness and neurological issues like pins and needles and memory problems.

The NHS further advises that vitamin B12 deficiency could lead to more severe health issues, including shortness of breath, indigestion, palpitations, and loss of appetite. Dr. Kukadia's insights serve as an urgent reminder of the importance of recognizing the symptoms and potential risks associated with B12 deficiency, especially in high-risk groups, emphasizing the need for appropriate dietary measures or supplementation to address this common yet serious nutritional gap.
