Flooding Drowns Displaced Persons Camps in Northwestern Syria

Heavy rains have caused severe flooding of displaced persons camps in northwestern Syria, leading to dire humanitarian conditions.

Heavy rains have inundated dozens of tents at displacement camps in northwestern Syria, creating harsh humanitarian conditions for families who are already marginalized. A report from Al Jazeera highlighted significant flooding in camps located in the Kherbet al-Jawz area of Idlib province and other camps in Latakia, due to torrential rains that led to the formation of powerful floodwaters.

The flooding has resulted in the submergence and sweeping away of tents close to seasonal waterways, causing extensive damage in various camps including Al-Fathia, Qat' al-Nahr, Martyrs of Syria, A'idoon, A'ta' al-Khayr, al-Damah, al-Ittiqan, Salma, and Salma 2. These camps are widely spread across the countryside of Jisr al-Shughur, western Idlib, and the Harem area, with varying degrees of damage reported in surrounding camps. The Syrian Civil Defense reported that heavy rains on Saturday led to flooding that overwhelmed the camps, necessitating extensive mobilization of emergency teams to rescue trapped families.

Rescue efforts faced significant challenges, as some Civil Defense teams were themselves trapped by rising waters while trying to evacuate residents, particularly near the al-Damah camp, highlighting the dire ground situation. This natural disaster comes at a time when displaced families already face severe hardships, raising concerns over their safety and access to basic needs in a region marred by ongoing conflict and instability.
