INEC conducts mock accreditation ahead of FCT council polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission conducted a mock accreditation exercise in preparation for the upcoming Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held a mock accreditation and voting exercise on Saturday as part of its preparations for the upcoming Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026. This exercise, taking place across the Federal Capital Territory, is aimed at testing the Commission's readiness and ensuring that election officials are fully equipped to manage the electoral process. The event is a critical step in ensuring that all systems function smoothly during the actual elections.
During a session with Supervisory Presiding Officer trainees, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan emphasized the importance of the training and the need for officials to deeply understand the election procedures as outlined in the official manual provided by the Commission. He pointed out that the training is not just theoretical but requires active engagement and comprehension of the topics discussed. The interactive nature of the session is designed to cultivate a better-prepared workforce for the elections ahead.
Amupitan also reminded the trainees of their responsibilities and the importance of impartiality in their roles, highlighting Nigeria's urgent need for credible elections. He urged the supervisors to strictly adhere to their duties and avoid any form of compromise that could undermine the integrity of the electoral process. This mock exercise is part of INEC's broader strategy to enhance the capacity of election officials and ensure that the electoral framework is robust enough to uphold democratic values in Nigeria.
