Wall of state school collapses during heavy rain in BH; VIDEO

A wall of a state school in Belo Horizonte collapsed during heavy rain, but fortunately, no students were injured.

A wall of the Escola Estadual Padre Matias in the Glória neighborhood of Belo Horizonte collapsed on the afternoon of Friday (6) during a heavy rainstorm. The collapse occurred at the sports court, impacting an area adjacent to a construction site for a 17-story building. Fortunately, students were in classrooms at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported.

The Civil Defense responded to the scene but was unable to access the interior of the school. They have cordoned off the area of the court where the wall fell for safety reasons. A reevaluation of the situation is scheduled for Saturday, although the specific time has yet to be determined, highlighting the ongoing concerns regarding safety in the aftermath of the incident.

The wall that collapsed was adjacent to a construction project that is expected to include 268 residential apartments and eight non-residential units. The legal responsibility for the construction is held by the Organizaçõe company. This incident raises questions about construction safety standards and the impact of such projects on surrounding buildings and facilities, particularly public schools.
