Young people have started using epilepsy medication as a drug

Young people in Denmark are increasingly misusing epilepsy medication, specifically Lyrica, alongside traditional opioids like opium and morphine.

In Denmark, there has been a disturbing trend among young people who are now turning to epilepsy medication, particularly Lyrica, as a recreational drug. According to the Center for Drug Research, 53 individuals were hospitalized last year after using Lyrica within a month prior to their admission, with more than half of those cases involving individuals aged 15 to 25. This signifies a growing concern about the misuse of prescription medications among the youth population.

Mikel Alberdi-Saugstrup, a physician in the Children and Young People's Department at Herlev Hospital, has observed a rise in cases where young patients have taken epilepsy medication for non-medical purposes. This situation marks a significant change from just six months ago, indicating that the trend of abusing such medications is becoming more prevalent. The rise in cases is alarming as it presents new risks and challenges in the realm of public health and drug prevention.

Alberdi-Saugstrup warns of the severe health risks associated with the misuse of Lyrica, highlighting the potential for significant poisoning incidents among youth. He emphasizes that these are prescription medications and should not be treated as recreational drugs. This raises vital awareness for parents, educators, and health professionals about the dangers of misuse and the importance of monitoring the use of prescription medications among young individuals.
