Over-the-Counter Medicine Leads to Young Person's Intensive Care in Kuopio – Fimea Warned About Paracetamol Challenge

Young individuals have been hospitalized this year due to paracetamol misuse, with cases in Kuopio raising concerns among healthcare professionals.

This year, there have been alarming reports of young people being hospitalized as a result of paracetamol overdoses, particularly in Kuopio, Finland. Assistant Chief Physician Laura Myllymäki from the Kuopio University Hospital's adolescent psychiatric ward stated that the worst cases involved intentional overdoses that required intensive medical care. Although the reported cases in Kuopio total fewer than ten, they primarily involve adolescents aged 13 to 17, prompting serious concerns about the increasing misuse of this common medication.

Paracetamol, widely used for pain relief and fever reduction, can cause severe liver damage even in small overdoses. The Finnish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (Fimea) has recently issued warnings regarding social media challenges that encourage the consumption of high doses of paracetamol, which could lead to serious health risks. Such trends, highlighted by Myllymäki, suggest a troubling influence of social media on young people's behavior and health choices, emphasizing the need for better awareness and preventive measures.

Myllymäki noted that the cases are being taken very seriously within the healthcare community, indicating a proactive approach to addressing this issue. The hospitalization of young individuals without significant pre-existing health issues due to paracetamol misuse underscores the urgency of addressing mental health and substance abuse problems among youth. This situation raises questions about the impact of social media on vulnerable populations and the importance of education on the safe use of medications.
