Franciscan from Pula placed in investigative detention for threatening other priests

A Franciscan priest from Pula has been placed in investigative detention due to multiple death threats made against fellow priests in Dubrovnik.

A 45-year-old Franciscan from Pula has been ordered into investigative detention for up to 30 days by the County Court in Dubrovnik, amid allegations of serious death threats made against other priests in the Franciscans’ Male Brothers monastery. The court accepted the prosecution's proposal, indicating a significant risk of the suspect repeating these violent actions, particularly due to his history of alcohol abuse and persistence in making threats.

Investigations revealed that the priest had threatened to harm or kill other priests during conflicts at the monastery. Upon his arrest, he was found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.66 per mille, and he voluntarily surrendered an airgun he had occasionally used. The gravity of the threats and the context of the priest’s behavior were key factors in the court's decision to deny bail and place him in detention instead of imposing lighter precautionary measures suggested by his lawyer.

This case raises concerns about the safety within religious institutions, especially when substance abuse issues intersect with violent behavior. The legal proceedings will reveal more about the priest's actions leading up to this point, and they reflect broader societal issues regarding the management of individuals who may pose threats to others, particularly in confined communities like monasteries.
