Report submitted: More than 100 cases of abuse in the Franciscan order
A report has revealed over 100 cases of sexual abuse against minors within the Franciscan order in Germany since 1945, with calls for accountability and forgiveness from church leaders.
A recent study released in Munich has documented over 100 instances of sexual abuse involving mostly underage boys within the Franciscan order since 1945. The study was led by Peter Caspari, who noted that 98 suspects had been identified, indicating a historical prevalence of abuse in educational settings run by the order. Of those affected, 75% were male, with many being between the ages of 10 and 15 at the time of the incidents.
The findings suggest that these reported cases represent merely the 'tip of the iceberg,' indicating that many more instances of abuse may exist in the shadows, unreported and undocumented. The Provincial Minister of the Franciscan order has publicly sought forgiveness for the pain and suffering caused to the victims, marking a significant acknowledgment of the ongoing crisis within the Church regarding how it has handled cases of sexual violence and abuse.
This report not only brings to light the alarming statistics surrounding these abuse cases but also emphasizes the need for accountability within religious institutions in Germany and beyond. With calls for further inquiry and support for victims, the findings may drive significant changes in the way the Church responds to allegations of abuse and ensures the protection of vulnerable individuals in its care.
