The Supreme Court of Lithuania rejected the third appeal from ‘Nataiva’ in A. Tapinas case

The Lithuanian Supreme Court has denied a third appeal by the organization ‘Nataiva’ in a defamation case involving public figures.

On February 5, the Lithuanian Supreme Court made a ruling rejecting a further appeal submitted by VšĮ ‘Nataiva’ in the ongoing case concerning A. Tapinas. The court's spokesperson, Tautvilė Merkevičiūtė, indicated that the appeal was dismissed due to the lack of grounds for a review of the case at the cassation level. This latest decision follows previous rulings where the Vilnius Regional Court imposed civil liability on Nataiva regarding the dissemination of false information about Tapinas.

In the civil defamation case against A. Tapinas, VšĮ ‘Nataiva’ has filed nine cassation appeals to the Supreme Court, all of which have been rejected thus far. The specific appeal in this instance sought to overturn a decision by the Vilnius Regional Court dated October 24, 2025, which dealt with civil liability issues, while simultaneously backing an earlier ruling from the Vilnius City District Court on March 17, 2025, that dismissed the claims against the organization. Moreover, there was a request for costs incurred during the trial processes to be awarded to the appellant.

The underlying controversy involves allegations made against A. Tapinas, fueled by claimed dissemination of false information by content creators affiliated with VšĮ ‘Nataiva.’ The repeated failures of the organization to successfully challenge the courts underscore a broader context of tensions surrounding freedom of speech and defamation laws in Lithuania, highlighting the difficulties public figures face in countering false narratives while also protecting their reputations.
