Nigeria: INEC Can't Choose Leaders for PDP - Turaki
The PDP leadership asserts that the Independent National Electoral Commission overstepped its authority by attempting to determine the party's leadership.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Taminu Turaki, has issued a strong statement against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asserting that it does not have the right to choose the party's leadership. This response comes in the wake of a recent INEC quarterly consultative meeting where the commission included representatives from a rival faction within the PDP, namely the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) led by Abdulraman Mohammed. The PDP contends that the NCC's presence at the meeting undermines the party's established constitutional processes.
The PDP's National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, emphasized that the commission's actions could lead to significant unrest within the party. He remarked that the involvement of individuals from a faction that does not have legitimate standing according to the party's constitution is both provocative and potentially detrimental to party unity. The PDP leadership is preparing to take legal action against what they perceive as unconstitutional meddling by INEC.
This situation highlights the tension between the PDP and INEC and raises questions about the commission's role in regulating political party affairs. The PDP's response indicates their commitment to maintaining internal order and constitutional governance, suggesting that they will not tolerate external interference in their leadership selection process.
