‘15-pyeong apartment, assets of 600 million’ Park Hong-geun... National Power says there’s nothing to question since he lives frugally
In a parliamentary confirmation hearing, opposition members remarked on Park Hong-geun’s humble finances, stating there was nothing to question due to his frugal lifestyle.
During the confirmation hearing for Park Hong-geun, the Minister of Planning and Finance nominee, an unusual moment occurred when opposition lawmakers commented on his modest financial background, suggesting there was little to criticize. Lee In-seon, a member of the ruling People Power Party, noted that past hearings have often involved controversies regarding the wealth of nominees, but in Park's case, despite his experience as a four-term lawmaker, his frugality appeared commendable and devoid of scandal.
According to the financial disclosure submitted on the 6th of this month, Park declared assets totaling 623.97 million won, which includes ownership of a 15-pyeong (approximately 49.77 square meters) apartment located in Shinnae-dong, Jungnang-gu, Seoul. Reports indicate that Park is expected to fully repay the bank mortgage on this apartment by the end of 2024. In stark contrast, his predecessor, Lee Hye-hoon, reported assets exceeding 17.57 billion won, embroiled in a controversy regarding questionable methods of accumulating wealth that have led to ongoing police investigations.
The position of Minister of Planning and Finance has been vacant for several months following the withdrawal of Lee Hye-hoon in January. The current President, Lee Jae-myung, appointed Park Hong-geun, believing his experience and purported frugality will benefit the ministry amid scrutiny surrounding financial ethics in government. This nomination highlights the contrasting lifestyles of various political figures and raises questions about transparency and accountability in public service, especially in light of past scandals that have rocked the ministry and led to public distrust in governmental practices.
