A real person alleviates feelings of loneliness better than artificial intelligence
A study finds that human interactions provide more lasting relief from feelings of loneliness compared to conversations with AI chatbots.
A recent study conducted by researchers from Canada and the United States has explored the impact of conversations with artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots on feelings of loneliness. With many people now using AI chatbots as daily conversation partners, the researchers aimed to determine if interactions with these digital entities provided any long-term emotional support comparable to what humans can offer. The study involved nearly 300 university students divided into three groups; one interacted with a randomly assigned peer via text messages daily, another engaged with an AI chatbot known as Sam, and the last group wrote a daily sentence reflecting on their day.
The results showed significant differences in how these three groups experienced feelings of loneliness over the course of the study. Students who texted with real peers not only reported feeling more emotionally supported but also showed greater long-term reductions in loneliness compared to those who interacted with the chatbot. The findings suggest that while AI technology can certainly offer short-term comfort, it lacks the deep emotional connection fostered through human interaction.
These insights have broader implications for mental health strategies, particularly in an era where digital interactions are becoming increasingly prevalent. The study highlights the importance of maintaining human relationships and suggests that, despite advances in technology, connecting with real people remains essential for emotional well-being, especially in combating loneliness.
