Suspicions: Finnish company illegally transported heavy equipment to Russia – value of 17 million
Finnish authorities suspect a local company of illegally exporting trucks and trailers to Russia in violation of EU sanctions, amounting to 17 million euros.
Finnish customs authorities are investigating a Finnish company for allegedly exporting a significant number of trucks and trailers to Russia in violation of EU sanctions implemented in April 2022. The investigation focuses on the alleged transport of 135 trucks and 29 trailers valued at approximately 17 million euros, conducted during 2022 and 2023. The customs department has initiated a preliminary investigation into the case as a serious regulatory violation.
So far, three Finnish nationals have been interviewed as suspects, including the company's owner and two employees, with one individual currently in custody. The exports were reportedly facilitated through invoices indicating a Turkish company as the buyer, whose management resides in Moscow. This connection raises questions about the compliance and enforcement of international sanctions by businesses operating in Finland and the role of intermediary companies.
The customs authorities pinpointed that the main route for these heavy equipment exports was through the Nuijamaa customs office. However, this illegal transit ceased following Finland's stricter monitoring measures, highlighting the ongoing challenges in preventing sanction evasion. The situation underscores the necessity for enhanced regulatory scrutiny to uphold international law and sanctions against Russia amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions.
