Fire at Yeongdeok Wind Power Plant Leaves One Worker Dead, Two Missing
A fire at the Yeongdeok Wind Power Plant in South Korea resulted in the death of one worker and left two others unaccounted for.
On the afternoon of the 23rd, a fire broke out at the Yeongdeok Wind Power Plant in Yeongdeok, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, claiming the life of one worker and leaving two others missing. The fire originated from the turbine blades of the wind generator, and hot embers quickly spread to the surrounding mountainous area. Emergency services, including 11 helicopters and 148 personnel, are engaged in firefighting efforts and have closed nearby roads to prevent further hazards from debris caused by the fire.
The Yeongdeok Wind Power Plant, inaugurated in April 2005, has an installed capacity of 39.6 megawatts, featuring 24 wind turbines rated at 1.650 kilowatts each. This incident follows a previous mishap on September 2, when one of the turbines, standing approximately 80 meters tall, collapsed. As a precaution, all operations at the wind farm were halted for safety inspections, which underscores ongoing safety concerns at the facility.
This tragic event raises alarms about the safety protocols and maintenance practices at wind power sites, especially given the recent turbine collapse incident. Investigations will likely focus on the cause of the fire and the adequacy of safety measures in place to protect workers while performing inspections and maintenance tasks at such industrial sites.
