Air Canada jet collides with ground vehicle at New York's LaGuardia Airport
An Air Canada Express jet collided with a ground vehicle at LaGuardia Airport in New York, resulting in injuries to multiple individuals.
An Air Canada Express regional jet, operating on a CRJ-900 aircraft, collided with a ground vehicle—specifically a fire truck operated by police officers—upon landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport. The incident occurred when the aircraft, arriving from Montreal, struck the vehicle at a speed of approximately 39 kilometers per hour. Eyewitnesses captured images showing substantial damage to the jet's nose, which tilted upwards following the collision.
In response to the accident, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a temporary ground stop for all flights departing from LaGuardia Airport, maintaining this halt until 1:30 am local time. Reports from NBC News indicated that four individuals sustained injuries in the incident, including the pilot and copilot of the aircraft, who were severely hurt, as well as police personnel from the fire truck, who suffered broken limbs but are reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital.
The FAA is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, and it has highlighted that this event raises significant concerns regarding ground safety and aircraft protocol at busy airports like LaGuardia. The investigation's outcome could lead to revised safety measures to mitigate such incidents in the future and ensure better coordination between ground vehicles and arriving flights.
