Sudan: Over 60 Killed in Strike on Hospital, WHO says
A strike on a hospital in East Darfur, Sudan, has left at least 64 people dead, according to the WHO.
A devastating attack on the Al Deain Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, Sudan, resulted in the deaths of at least 64 individuals, including 13 children, medical staff, and various patients. The strike, attributed to a drone attack by the Sudanese army, also left 89 others wounded. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the violence, emphasizing the severe toll on healthcare in the region.
Since the onset of the civil war in Sudan in April 2023, the health sector has faced unprecedented assaults, with over 2,000 lives lost in more than 200 attacks on medical facilities. This ongoing conflict underscores the urgent need for a ceasefire and humanitarian action to protect civilians and healthcare workers. Ghebreyesus highlighted the critical state of healthcare with hospitals rendered non-functional due to violence, urging for an immediate end to the war.
The attack on the hospital is part of a broader pattern of violence that has plagued Sudan, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the country. As health facilities are compromised, access to essential medical care continues to diminish, further worsening the suffering of the civilian population. The international community is called upon to respond to this emerging crisis and advocate for the protection of healthcare workers and facilities in conflict zones.
