Rainer Saks: Trump's Frustrated Posts Do Not Improve the Situation in the Middle East
Security expert Rainer Saks critiques Donald Trump's social media posts regarding the Middle East, stating they contribute little to the situation.
Rainer Saks, a security expert, assessed Donald Trump's recent social media statements about the Middle East during an interview on "Vikerhommik." Saks described Trump's comments as mere 'hot air,' claiming that while Trump asserts the U.S. is nearing its objectives in the Middle East, the situation on the ground indicates otherwise. He emphasized the need for a shift in leadership roles regarding the maritime route security in the Strait of Hormuz to other nations.
In his analysis, Saks pointed out two critical aspects to consider when evaluating the events unfolding in the Middle East. On one hand, Iran has consistently been enhancing its military capabilities and preparing for conflict. This growing strength is presented as a primary reason for the current U.S. and Israeli military actions in the region. He acknowledged that at the moment, Iran might not be able to mount significant military resistance, but historical context is crucial for understanding the current dynamics.
Saks further elaborated on the escalation of violence that began in October 2023 when Hamas launched attacks on Israel, confirmed to be supported by Iran. The antagonism against Israel has since seen alliances form with Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthi forces, who have been targeting international shipping since the beginning of 2023 with weapons provided by Iran. Saks stresses that the ongoing conflicts directly relate to Iran's involvement and directive actions, thus complicating the situation for U.S. and Israeli strategies in the area.
