HU: A harsh stop to the popular way of day dances

Helsinki's city officials have banned customers from tipping orchestras at daytime dance events held in service centers to combat the informal economy.

Helsinki's new guideline prohibits customers from giving tips to orchestras performing at daytime dance events in service centers, effective June 1. This decision ends a practice where patrons could voluntarily offer small gratuities as compensation for live performances. Previously, orchestras received reimbursement for coffee service in addition to tips collected in donation boxes.

The city's health and social services department, under the direction of Sari Hedman, stated that the ban aims to prevent support for the informal economy, as continuing the practice could inadvertently foster unregulated financial transactions. The decision arose after the practice was highlighted, prompting city officials to take action against it.

Daytime dances are held at service centers such as the Kamppi Center and Kinapori, drawing social interaction and engagement among the elderly community. However, the new restriction may impact the financial viability of performances as artists will no longer receive tips that have previously supplemented their earnings. The city emphasizes its commitment to regulating and formalizing services within its facilities to foster transparency.
