Gyeonggi Province Assembly to Establish the First Nationwide Ordinance to Support Families of Migrant Workers Who Died from Workplace Accidents

Gyeonggi Province is set to implement a pioneering ordinance providing support for families of migrant workers who die in workplace accidents, addressing gaps in welfare for these families.

The Gyeonggi Province Assembly has announced plans to establish a first-of-its-kind ordinance in South Korea aimed at supporting the families of migrant workers who have died due to workplace accidents. The ordinance proposed by lawmaker Yoo Ho-jun (Democratic Party, Namyangju 6) is intended to provide substantial administrative and financial assistance to the bereaved families who have historically fallen into welfare administrative blind spots. Key aspects of the support include assistance with immigration procedures, accommodations during their stay, funeral arrangements, and legal consultations. Additionally, the ordinance aims to set up a collaborative response system that encompasses local governments, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Ministry of Justice, foreign consulates, and international organizations to ensure a swift response in the event of workplace fatalities involving migrant workers.
