Want to be a coach attendant? Just pass the 12th grade
The Indian Railways has updated the eligibility criteria for coach attendants, allowing only candidates who have passed the 12th grade to apply, along with a mandatory ITI certificate and three months of housekeeping training.
In a significant change aimed at improving service quality, the Indian Railways has revised the eligibility criteria for the position of coach attendant. Previously, candidates only needed to have completed the 10th grade, but this has now been raised to the 12th grade. This decision comes in response to various complaints about service standards that arose due to a lack of qualified personnel. Now, in addition to passing the 12th grade, candidates must also have an ITI certificate along with three months of housekeeping training.
The directive for this change was issued by Lov Kumar, the Director of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Railway Board, to all General Managers of the railway zones. The intention behind this new requirement is to ensure that passengers receive better and more convenient services during their travels. This move reflects a broader strategy to enhance passenger experience by improving the professionalism and skills of those employed in service roles within the railway system.
Furthermore, it is important to note that the recruitment of coach attendants is not directly conducted by the Railways but is typically handled by private hiring agencies. This reflects a trend in various sectors where outsourcing has become a common practice for filling operational roles. The upgrade in educational requirements signifies a shift towards elevating the standards within the railway's support staff, which is expected to contribute positively to the overall service quality in the Indian Railways.
