China developing first tourist submersible for trips 1,000 metres under the sea

China is set to develop its first tourist submersible capable of descending 1,000 meters under the ocean, aiming for commercial operations by 2030.

China is making strides in the tourism sector by developing its first tourist submersible that can dive 1,000 meters under the sea. Planned by engineers at the China Ship Scientific Research Centre in Wuxi, the prototype is slated for completion by the end of this year. It is designed for up to four passengers per trip, offering a once-in-a-lifetime deep-sea adventure for holidaymakers, with commercial operations expected to commence by 2030.

Currently, China has numerous submersibles for shallow water tourism, mainly for depths of about 20 meters, suitable for lakes and coastal areas. The shift to a deeper diving submersible signals a move towards more thrilling underwater experiences, but this comes with engineering challenges as these vehicles must endure significantly higher external water pressures at greater depths. This advancement showcases China's push to diversify its tourism offerings beyond conventional experiences.

The China Ship Scientific Research Centre, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp., aims to leverage its expertise in deep-sea technology. The centre has previously developed advanced submersibles like Jiaolong and Deep Sea Warrior that have been utilized for scientific exploration. The new tourist-focused submersible represents the next chapter in making deep-sea journeys accessible to civilian adventurers, potentially enhancing China's reputation as a destination for adventure tourism.
