NDLEA seizes drugs hidden in carton walls, creams at Lagos airport
Operatives of the NDLEA intercepted illicit drugs hidden in various items at Lagos airport, thwarting international drug trafficking attempts.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) of Nigeria has successfully intercepted multiple consignments of illegal drugs at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The drugs were cleverly concealed in the walls of cartons, within winter jackets, and inside body cream containers. This operation was part of the NDLEA's ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking syndicates that attempt to smuggle narcotics to international locations, including Italy and New Zealand.
During the operations, two specific consignments headed for Italy were captured, which led to the arrest of individuals involved in the smuggling attempts. Notably, a suspect named Friday Ehianuka, 37, was caught on March 20 while trying to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Rome. Authorities discovered 2,698 pills of tramadol, a controlled substance, hidden inside containers of skin-lightening body cream in his luggage. His arrest underscores the NDLEA's vigilant measures at key transit points for drug trafficking.
Femi Babafemi, the agency's spokesman, reported that the arrested suspect acknowledged plans to be compensated in euros upon the successful delivery of the drugs. This incident highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Nigeria and the crucial role of the NDLEA in intercepting illicit substances before they reach their intended destinations, reflecting both national security concerns and public health issues related to drug abuse.
