New protected area and expansion of conservation and protection: understand the decrees signed by Lula at COP15 in MS
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced an expansion of protected areas in the Pantanal and the creation of a new conservation unit in the Cerrado during the COP15 conference in Brazil.
On Sunday, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced significant conservation measures, including the expansion of protected areas in the Pantanal and the establishment of a new conservation unit in the Cerrado, during the High-Level Segment of the Conference of Parties of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP15). These measures encompass over 174,000 hectares and aim to address critical environmental concerns in the region.
The initiatives include the expansion of the Pantanal Matogrossense National Park and the Taiamã Ecological Station. Additionally, the new Sustainable Development Reserve of the Córregos dos Vales do Norte de Minas has been created, aimed at enhancing the ecological integrity of the Cerrado region. These developments were presented amidst discussions involving authorities and experts focused on biodiversity preservation and the conservation of migratory species, highlighting the urgency of protecting natural habitats.
The Brazilian government has emphasized that these actions are part of a broader strategy to protect biodiversity, conserve water resources, and support traditional communities in these regions. By creating and expanding protected areas, the Lula administration is seeking to reinforce its commitment to sustainable development and assert Brazil's leadership in global conservation efforts, especially in light of increasing climate change challenges.
