81 dead in heavy rains and floods in Kenya

Severe flooding in Kenya has resulted in 81 deaths and displaced nearly 2,700 families, particularly affecting Nairobi.

In recent severe flooding incidents in Kenya, 81 people have reportedly lost their lives, with the capital city Nairobi being the hardest hit. The national police spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, confirmed that the torrential rains have displaced nearly 2,700 families, causing significant destruction to properties and infrastructure. Among the casualties, 37 deaths occurred in Nairobi, where heavy rains turned streets into swift rivers, leading to widespread flooding of homes and businesses.

Authorities issued evacuation orders for several slum areas located below a dam in Nairobi due to the immediate threat of water overflow. Although officials warned that rising water levels could breach the dam, it has thus far withstood the pressure. However, the situation remains critical as continuous rainfall is forecasted until Tuesday, urging residents to exercise extreme caution.

The ongoing precipitation poses an increasing risk of further flooding and complicates the response efforts for affected families. The national and local governments face significant challenges in managing both the immediate humanitarian needs of the displaced and the long-term implications of such frequent and intense weather events on urban infrastructure and public safety in Kenya.
