Group urges FG to prioritise N'Delta ports development

The Ijaw Youth Congress Worldwide has urged the Nigerian Federal Government to prioritize the development and operationalization of key ports in the Niger Delta region.

The Ijaw Youth Congress Worldwide has made a strong appeal to the Nigerian Federal Government to expedite the development and full operationalization of several vital ports located in the Niger Delta region. These ports include notable facilities in Delta State such as Burutu, Warri, Sapele, and Koko, as well as Onne and Bonny in Rivers State, Brass and Agge Deep Seaport in Bayelsa State, and Gelegele Seaport in Edo State. This initiative is crucial for enhancing the economic potential and connectivity of this resource-rich area.

The Congress, represented by spokesman Binebai Princewill, acknowledged the government's initiatives towards modernizing Nigeria's port infrastructure. They specifically noted the significant investments recently made in Lagos but emphasized the necessity of ensuring that the Niger Delta region does not get overlooked in such national developments. The statement reflects ongoing concerns about equitable distribution of resources and opportunities across different regions of Nigeria.

The IYC's call for fairness and equity in the development of port facilities is a significant reminder of the need for the federal government to address developmental imbalances. By prioritizing the Niger Delta ports, the government could not only boost local economies but also affirm its commitment to inclusivity in national infrastructure plans, thereby promoting greater regional equity and development in line with the principle of federal character.
