Video: Essaouira advances in the Confederation Cup against Wydad, Zamalek and CR Belouizdad qualify

Olympique Safi advanced to the semi-finals of the African Confederation Cup despite a thrilling 2-2 draw against ten-man Wydad.

Olympique Safi secured a place in the semi-finals of the African Confederation Cup after managing a 2-2 draw against Wydad, who played with ten men during a tense Moroccan encounter. Safi capitalized on their aggregate performance, having drawn 1-1 in the first leg at home, advancing on an away goals rule after scoring two goals in Wydad’s stadium.

The match took a turn when Wydad's goalkeeper Mehdi Ben Abid was sent off in the 26th minute following a foul on Essaouira's Imad Khnouss. This set the stage for Safi to take advantage, and they led 1-0 by the 40th minute after a penalty converted by Sofiane Mouden, awarded due to the second goalkeeper Abdul Ali Mohammedy’s foul. Even though Wydad attempted to respond with shots on goal, they couldn’t secure a lead before the half-time break.

Late in the first half, Wydad's Mohamed Mefid equalized deep into injury time, raising hopes for a comeback. However, as the second half progressed, both teams struggled to find the back of the net, with notable missed chances from Wydad, including a crucial shot from Hakim Ziyech. Despite their efforts, the game concluded in a draw, allowing Olympique Safi to proceed to the next round along with Zamalek and CR Belouizdad, who also secured their spots in the semi-finals.
