I Want to Eliminate People Giving Up Their Dreams Due to the Environment: Kotaro Fukuoka from the NPO Musubite

Kotaro Fukuoka, leader of the NPO Musubite, works to provide educational support for the underprivileged in India, focusing on those left behind by rapid economic growth.

Kotaro Fukuoka, the 36-year-old representative director of the NPO Musubite, is dedicated to addressing the needs of marginalized individuals in India, which is experiencing rapid economic growth. Operating mainly in the northern state of Bihar and extending to Kolkata and Gurgaon, Fukuoka believes that education is crucial for the impoverished communities. In areas where there are no schools, Musubite is establishing informal classrooms for children, allowing them to access learning materials created by the organization, such as bilingual newspapers. These initiatives aim not only to teach basic literacy but also to introduce broader societal concepts to the children.

In Gorngalia village in Bihar, around 30 children gather in a classroom set up on the clay floor of a local home. During the sessions, topics covered range from local events like a book fair to moral lessons such as the importance of standing in line. As children learn and improve, they receive positive reinforcement from Fukuoka, fostering an encouraging learning environment. Despite the challenging living conditions, where laborers earn meager wages producing bricks, Fukuoka's NPO is committed to ensuring these children's educational aspirations are not abandoned due to their circumstances.

Fukuoka emphasizes the struggle of those neglected by society, referring to them as "people whose existence has been forgotten." The village faced a devastating flood in 2025, and until Musubite offered emergency support, there was no assistance for the affected community. His work addresses systemic issues of caste and poverty, providing a beacon of hope for future generations and advocating for the fundamental right to education for all, regardless of their background or environment.
