Left defeats far-right in municipal elections in France, according to projections

French left is projected to maintain the Mayorships of Paris and Marseille, defeating far-right candidates according to exit polls released on Sunday (22).

In the recent municipal elections in France, the left is poised to retain control of the major cities of Paris and Marseille, overcoming candidates from the far-right based on projections from exit polls. This electoral outcome serves as a crucial indicator for the upcoming presidential elections in 2027, where President Emmanuel Macron is not eligible to run again. In Paris, socialist candidate Emmanuel Grégoire reportedly leads with 53.1% of the votes, significantly ahead of conservative candidate Rachida Dati, who had tacit support from the far-right. If these projections hold true, Grégoire would become the third consecutive socialist mayor of Paris since 2001, succeeding Anne Hidalgo.

Meanwhile, in Marseille, projections suggest that the current mayor Benoît Payan, from the moderate left, will be reelected against far-right deputy Franck Allisio. The left's success is attributed in part to the strategic withdrawal of the far-left candidate from the LFI party in the second round of voting, which aimed to consolidate support and prevent a far-right win. This electoral victory reinforces the left's standing in French politics and indicates a potential shift in voter sentiment in anticipation of the next presidential race, particularly as the country grapples with rising challenges from the far-right.
