Fight over food causes brawl between jaguars in the Pantanal of MS
Tourists captured video footage of two jaguars fighting over a carcass in the Pantanal region of Brazil.
In the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul, two jaguars named Pipa and Aracy were filmed fighting over food in videos shared by the NGO Onçafari. The episode occurred during a tourist excursion at Fazenda Caiman in Miranda and was notable for showcasing the natural predatory behaviors of these big cats. The brawl ended with the two jaguars tussling their way into a nearby river.
According to the guides present during the event, Caroline Prange and Lucas Morgado, the confrontation stemmed from the presence of a carcass that one of the jaguars had killed. Pipa, the younger jaguar, attempted to approach the carcass to eat, but Aracy, the older jaguar and likely the owner of the prey, defended her food aggressively. Experts note that such behavior is typical among jaguars, particularly when food is involved, leading to heightened protective instincts and potential conflict between them.
The videos, filmed by Lithuanian tourists Tautvilas Ligeika and his partner, serve as important reminders of wildlife interactions and the natural order in animal behavior. Observing these dynamics in their habitat provides valuable insights into the ecological relationships and survival strategies of jaguars, critical for their conservation and the education of visitors in ecologically sensitive areas like the Pantanal.
