Daughter of Nelson Rodrigues will release a documentary about the work of Oscar Niemeyer's nephew

Sonia Rodrigues, daughter of playwright Nelson Rodrigues, will release the documentary 'In the Labyrinth of the Brain' on April 14, focusing on the work of neurosurgeon Paulo Niemeyer Filho.

Sonia Rodrigues, a writer and screenwriter and the daughter of playwright Nelson Rodrigues, is set to release her documentary titled 'In the Labyrinth of the Brain' in cinemas on April 14. The film is based on the book of the same name written by Paulo Niemeyer Filho, a renowned neurosurgeon and one of the members of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. The documentary not only highlights the evolution of neurosurgery in Brazil but also pays tribute to the legacy of Paulo Niemeyer Soares, who was instrumental in establishing the State Institute of the Brain, which currently focuses on complex surgeries under the Brazilian public health system, SUS.

The narrative takes on a personal tone as Sonia reflects on her family's history with Paulo Niemeyer Soares, who is also the brother of famous architect Oscar Niemeyer. In a poignant moment during the film, Sonia recounts how her sister's life was saved in the 1980s by Soares, when she suffered a stroke while pregnant and was rushed to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Rio de Janeiro. This institution housed the only CT scanner in the country at that time, allowing for a timely and accurate diagnosis that ultimately led to her survival and enabled her to remain with her family for an additional four decades.

This documentary goes beyond medical and technical discussions; it intertwines personal histories that resonate deeply with many families who have had similar experiences with health crises. It brings to light not only the advances in neurosurgery but also serves as a touching reminder of the fragility of life and the critical importance of medical innovation in saving lives, thus contributing to the ongoing dialogue about health care access and advancements in Brazil.
