Judge who saw woman being assaulted in court creates project against domestic violence and wins 'Oscar of Justice'
A Brazilian judge has initiated a project called 'Somos Marias' aimed at combating domestic violence, winning notable awards for its success in addressing this critical issue.
In Brazil, domestic violence remains a pervasive issue, often perpetuated across generations within families, frequently without any disclosures. The initiative 'Somos Marias', which translates to 'We Are Marias', emerged in Peruíbe, São Paulo, to address this challenge. The project provides a comprehensive support system for women experiencing violence, offering not only shelter and guidance but also concrete alternatives for the victims, their children, and even the aggressors. The aim is to break the cycle of violence by addressing the root causes and providing necessary resources and support.
Promoted by Judge Daniélle Camara Takahashi Cosentino Grandinétti, who conceived the idea in 2019, 'Somos Marias' has reportedly assisted over four thousand women. Notably, this initiative has gained recognition in the Brazilian justice system, winning two prestigious awards, including the Innovare Prize, which is often referred to as the 'Oscar of Justice'. This acknowledgment underlines the project’s innovative approach to tackling domestic violence and its importance in the legal landscape in Brazil.
The project offers multidisciplinary assistance to victims of domestic violence, acknowledging that the challenges extend beyond the act of reporting incidents. The comprehensive strategy facilitates not just immediate solutions but long-term support for victims, aiming to create lasting change in the societal perception of domestic violence. This initiative stands as a critical model for similar programs across Brazil and may inspire further efforts to effectively combat domestic violence nationwide.
