Per Hegna, a celebrated Norwegian tennis player known for his dominance in the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 80 after a short illness. Hegna's family confirmed his death, noting that he had a long and illustrious career, winning the prestigious King’s Cup for eight consecutive years starting in 1973. His influence on Norwegian tennis was profound, with significant achievements that included 26 national championships between 1973 and 1980 and reaching a career-high ATP ranking of 180 in December 1976.
Hegna spent much of his life in Ullern, Oslo, where he was recognized as an honorary member of the Berg Tennis Club, which has a tennis court named in his honor. He remained active in the sport up to his final days, showcasing his lifelong passion for tennis, as stated by his daughter, Anette Smith. The tennis community in Norway mourns his loss, remembering him not only as a champion but as an ambassador for the sport.
He celebrated his 80th birthday in July of last year and is survived by three daughters, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
