Finnish Forestry Giant Addressed Employee Obesity: Here’s What Happened
Stora Enso, a Finnish forestry company, has reported positive results from a program aimed at addressing employee obesity through a combination of medical treatment and lifestyle counseling.
Stora Enso, a leading forestry company in Finland, has initiated an innovative program to tackle employee obesity, demonstrating their commitment to improving workforce health. The initiative, developed by the health company Pihlajalinna, involves a combination of medical treatment and lifestyle changes designed specifically for employees with obesity, defined by a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 30. By partially covering the costs of medication, Stora Enso encourages participation while also motivating employees to share in the financial responsibility for their health improvements.
The program began with a comprehensive assessment of the participants' lifestyles, which was crucial in tailoring the approach for each individual. Those enrolled received personalized counseling focusing on diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management. The continuous support took the form of regular discussions with healthcare professionals, ensuring that participants were not left to navigate their new lifestyle changes alone. This structured support system aims to provide employees with the tools and motivation necessary to achieve sustainable weight loss and better overall health.
According to Tero Saukkonen, the medical director at Novo Nordisk, the program's effectiveness reflects a growing awareness among employers of the importance of managing employee health issues, particularly as they relate to productivity. With a significant portion of participants reporting decreased work capability due to excessive absenteeism, which is defined as being absent for more than 14 days a year, this initiative not only benefits the individuals but potentially enhances the overall efficiency of the workforce. Stora Enso's proactive approach could set a benchmark for other companies in the industry, demonstrating that investing in employee well-being can lead to tangible benefits for both employees and employers.
