The German Social Democrats have lost elections in Rhineland-Palatinate for the first time in 35 years, with the Christian Democratic Union emerging victorious.
In a significant shift in the political landscape of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has won the state elections, marking the first time in 35 years that the Social Democrats (SPD) have failed to secure victory. The CDU, led by Gordon Schnieder, garnered 30.6% of the votes, reflecting a 2.8% increase from the previous elections in 2021. Conversely, the SPD saw its support plummet to 26.9%, losing 8.8% of the votes compared to their last performance, revealing a notable decline for the long-dominant party in the region.
