Pemex cleans hydrocarbons in Río Seco, near Dos Bocas, after spill on the coasts of Tabasco
Pemex is addressing a hydrocarbon spill in Río Seco, Tabasco, with containment and recovery actions undertaken in coordination with the Navy.
Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has announced that specialized personnel are actively working, in cooperation with the Secretary of the Navy (Semar), to contain and recover hydrocarbons from the Río Seco, located near the municipality of Paraíso in Tabasco. This area is in proximity to the Dos Bocas refinery. According to the state-owned entity's official statement, the situation is currently under control and poses no risk to the local population. The focus of the ongoing efforts is to prevent the spread of the contaminant and recover the material present in the river.
As part of the measures implemented, Pemex outlined that containment barriers have been established to confine the hydrocarbons and prevent them from spreading towards the nearby Mecoacán lagoon. Additionally, recovery efforts include the use of oleophilic cords, which are effective in collecting the contaminated material. The company has reassured the public by stating that authorities are monitoring the situation closely and taking necessary actions to mitigate any potential environmental impacts.
This incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of Pemex's operations, particularly regarding environmental safety and spill management, in the wake of numerous similar incidents in the past. The ongoing efforts to manage this spill not only reflect Pemex's commitment to environmental responsibility but also underline the challenges the company faces in its operational activities in ecologically sensitive areas, especially as it ramps up production at critical sites like the Dos Bocas refinery.
