Do you use a scooter, motorcycle, or electric bike? Here is what we know about the plates and procedures for circulation in CDMX

New regulations have been introduced in Mexico City for electric scooters, bikes, and motorcycles, requiring drivers to have a license, plates, and helmets.

Mobility in Mexico City (CDMX) is undergoing significant changes due to the increasing presence of electric scooters, bikes, and motorcycles on the streets. In response to this rise, local authorities have implemented regulations to ensure safety and order amidst a complex traffic environment filled with various vehicles. Starting in August next year, operators of these electric vehicles will be required to obtain a driver's license, register their vehicles with plates, and wear a helmet when riding.

The decision to enforce these new measures comes amidst growing concerns about road safety as accidents involving electric vehicles have escalated. The authorities recognized the urgent need to amend the Mobility Law to enhance safety for all road users, which includes pedestrians and traditional motorists. While the new regulations will take a year to fully implement, they aim to create a more organized and secure transportation infrastructure in the city.

Additionally, officials have set a 360-day timeline for finalizing the rules and procedures related to these regulations. The proactive approach seeks to address the challenges presented by mixing various modes of transport on the streets of CDMX, allowing the government to monitor and manage the thriving use of electric mobility options and enhancing overall traffic management and safety in the metropolis.
