Zema resigns in MG with attacks on Lula's government
The Governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, resigned while criticizing President Lula's administration and vowing to end corruption.
Romeu Zema, the Governor of Minas Gerais, tendered his resignation during a ceremony that prominently featured his criticisms of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's government. In a passionate speech, Zema lamented the current state of the nation and expressed his frustrations over corruption, declaring that Brazilian citizens can no longer tolerate living in fear or facing financial instability. He asserted that Lula's administration is destroying the country, which reflects a significant political stance as Zema positions himself in the national political arena.
Zema, who is affiliated with the Novo party, indicated his intentions to run for the presidency in the upcoming elections, despite lacking strong support in recent opinion polls. With only 4% of voter support according to the latest Datafolha survey, he faces considerable competition from Lula, who leads with 38%, as well as Flávio Bolsonaro and Ratinho Junior. This situation highlights Zema's uphill battle as he seeks to establish himself as a viable candidate while voicing discontent with the current federal government.
Following his resignation, Zema passed his gubernatorial responsibilities to his vice governor, Mateus Simões, who is also preparing to run for the state's governorship. Zema is now strategizing to attract support from the PL party and bolsonarism representatives to solidify his political base. This development could influence the dynamics of state and national elections as Zema's rhetoric continues to resonate with discontented voters, positioning him as a notable contender in Brazil's political landscape.
