NLC rejects N6tn power sector bailout, demands reform

The Nigeria Labour Congress has rejected a proposed N6 trillion bailout for power generation companies, advocating for structural reforms instead.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has publicly rejected the proposed N6 trillion bailout for power generation companies in Nigeria, emphasizing that such financial interventions have failed to yield improvements in the country’s electricity supply. NLC President Joe Ajaero stated in a recent announcement in Abuja that the repeated monetary support is merely a temporary fix that does not address the fundamental issues plaguing the energy sector.

Ajaero pointed out that the persistent inefficiencies and high tariffs faced by ordinary Nigerians arise from a fundamentally flawed power system, which has not been improved despite large financial injections over time. He argued that these financial efforts only serve to keep an inadequate system afloat without leading to any substantive progress in electricity availability for the population. His call for reform highlights the need for a systemic overhaul instead of reliance on bailouts that do not resolve the inherent problems in the sector.

In advocating for change, Ajaero suggested the merging of the Ministries of Petroleum and Power to create a unified Ministry of Energy, which he believes would improve coordination and efficiency in energy management, particularly in the gas supply necessary for thermal power generation. This recommendation reflects a growing concern regarding the inefficiencies caused by the current separation of the sectors, which has detrimental effects on the stability and reliability of electricity supply in Nigeria.
