Pakistan Becomes 'Terroristan'! Tops Global Terrorism Index
For the first time, Pakistan has reached the top of the Global Terrorism Index, reflecting a significant increase in terrorism-related deaths and incidents in 2025.
Pakistan has attained an alarming distinction, becoming the top country on the Global Terrorism Index for the year 2026. The data reveals a 6% increase in deaths resulting from terrorism in 2025, with at least 1,139 fatalities reported alongside 1,045 recorded terrorist incidents, marking the highest figures since 2013. This dramatic rise is indicative of the deteriorating security situation in the country, which has been further exacerbated by strained relations with Afghanistan and the increasing activities of banned terrorist organizations such as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and the Balochistan Liberation Army.
Among the identified terrorist groups, Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has emerged as the most dangerous organization, now ranked third globally. Since 2009, this group has been responsible for over 67% of attacks in Pakistan, which is a stark contrast compared to the second-most active terrorist organization, making TTP significantly more impactful in terms of violence. The report highlights that in 2025, TTP's attacks surged by 24%, reaching 595 incidents, mostly concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The implications of this surge in terrorism not only threaten the safety and stability of Pakistan but also have regional ramifications, particularly in its relationships with neighboring countries. The report underscores the urgent need for effective counter-terrorism strategies and regional cooperation to address the evolving terrorist threat, particularly from TTP and associated groups, as these issues continue to undermine peace and security in the region.
