Minister describes efforts to strengthen protection of ports in Odesa Oblast
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba announced new measures to enhance the security of port infrastructure in Odesa Oblast amidst increasing attacks.
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development of Communities and Territories, Oleksii Kuleba, highlighted significant efforts to bolster the security of port infrastructure in the cities of Odesa and Chornomorsk during a working visit on March 22. This initiative responds to a sharp rise in attacks on these strategic locations, reflecting the ongoing tensions in the region. Kuleba indicated that the number of attacks has already surpassed those recorded in the entirety of the previous year, with more than 180 incidents reported in 2026 alone.
To address these pressing security concerns, Kuleba outlined specific enhancements being implemented. These include increasing the presence of mobile fire groups, boosting the effectiveness of interceptor UAV crews, and expanding electronic warfare capabilities. The coordination with military forces is also being intensified to improve response times and overall interception rates. Notably, there has been a reported increase in interception effectiveness by 25-35%, showcasing the immediate impact of these measures.
The backdrop of these developments is marked by a continuous pattern of large-scale airstrikes targeting Odesaβs port infrastructure, underlining the significance of these ports to Ukraineβs economy and security. As the conflict persists, the safety of such critical assets is paramount, and the government's proactive stance reflects its commitment to safeguarding vital infrastructure from ongoing threats. The increasing frequency of attacks not only raises concerns about immediate security but also poses broader implications for trade and supply chains in the region.
